Meet Aaliyah. When she was 7 years old, Aaliyah’s 16-year-old brother was shot dead, rocking her and her family’s world. In 2014 her 20-year-old brother and her cousin were both killed within a week of each other- both a result of gun violence. These horrific events sparked a sense of injustice in Aaliyah’s heart, inspiring her to create The ASW Foundation. Her work within this foundation includes coordinating and running community events and talking to students at local schools, raising awareness about the seriousness of gun violence. The ASW Foundation also provides two college-bound senior students from her local high school with a scholarship- with entrants writing about their views on gun violence and how they could reduce the local youth violence. At just 15 years old, Aaliyah’s passion for change is strong, and she is willing to do everything in her power to make an impact in her local community. She is a Strong Woman.
